Time Team - Sunday 6th June
Page 2/4
The following photographs were taken while the Time Team were excavating the Wemyss Caves.

Some photographs may not be as sharp as I would like, as some of the photographs were taken in low light situations. I could not use flash (all the time) as filming was taking place or because of low light and people moved or I could not hold the camera steady!

The images that follow give a flavour of the day, they record some of the activities on the day. Some pictures are exclusive and will more than likely not be seen anywhere else.

The following set of photo's were taken in the Well Cave.
Above Douglas Spears is seen looking at the site of the original Well.
timeteamsun0038
A closer look at the site of the original well. Some water has started to appear in the now uncovered well. The water was, in Pictish and medieval times,
supposed to have healing powers.

Douglas discussing progress with one of his colleagues.

timeteamsun0040
One of the theories talked about locally has been that there
was a tunnel running from the castle to the Well cave. It would appear from
excavation that this is not the case.
There would appear to be no tunnel linking the Castle and the Well cave.

Recording findings.

Looking towards the rood of the cave, showing the pipe fitted
to allow gases to escape.
timeteamsun0047
One of the metal ties that had been fitted in the cave to support the roof.
(I don't know when these were fitted)

timeteamsun0048
Some of the graffiti found in the cave Who were William Wallace and
James Wood? These are dated 1868.

timeteamsun0049
Looking towards the tunnel that provides access to the cave.
It is a 'crawl' on hands and knees to gain access.

timeteamsun0051
A look at one of the side walls. (opposite the graffiti wall pic).

Douglas takes one last look back into the Well cave before leaving.

These were my last photo's of the Well cave before I departed.

timeteamsun0059
Above and below: The entrance to the Well cave from the outside.
As can be seen the entrance is very small and it is not advised to be wearing
good jeans/trousers or good shoes/boots when trying to crawl in!!!
